Travel The Pantanal, Brazil

The Pantanal is a must see in Brazil. It is the largest contiguous wetland in the world and is the place to go when you want to see countless animals in their natural environment.

Although anytime is a good time to visit the Pantanal, the best time to go is during the dry season (April/May to September/October). Bird life hits its peak from July to September and jaguar sightings peak in September and October. The wet season is a difficult time to travel here due to the constant rain and flooding as well as the heat, but it still has its own special rewards.

Because you can’t buy much in the Pantanal, you will need to pack smart. Bring clothes for hot weather in the day and cooler temperatures at night. Bring lots of mosquito repellent and sunscreen, as well as a pair of sunglasses and a hat. A sarong is also a smart choice as it has many useful functions. Also pack a good pair of shoes, some rain gear, and long sleeved shirts and pants for protection from mosquitoes.

When it comes to animal spotting bring binoculars and a strong flashlight as well as all of your camera gear.

When visiting the Pantanal it is possible to do it yourself but it is not recommended because the tourist infrastructure is lacking due to the seasonal swings and heavy rains and flooding. What you should do is join and organized tour. This way you will have (hopefully) a knowledgeable guide who is an expert animal spotter.

Although there are three gateway cities into the Pantanal (Cuiabá, Corumbá, and Campo) but Cuiabá, is the best option as the tour operators out of here are more professional and more knowledgeable. All tours offer transport, food, and lodging, and cost R$200 per day and up. The Lonely Planet lists several recommended tour operators, and usually selects operators who are ecologically sound.

To get to the Pantanal you will either need to fly in from Manaus, Brazsilia, Rio, or São Paulo, or you can bus in from Sao Paulo or Bonito. Costs vary so ask for discounts and don’t be afraid to bargain.

From the Pantanal you ca head back to Rio or São Paulo or hop on a bus to Foz do Iguaçu on you way back to São Paulo to complete your ‘round Brazil trip. Congrats on an experience of a lifetime!
